Kochi: Babu Abraham, author of Kambilikandamthile Kalbaranikal, said that writing one’s memories honestly, without embellishment, will always find acceptance among readers. He was speaking at a discussion based on the book, held as part of the Summit of the Future, organized by Jain University.

Describing the work as both a personal narrative and a reflection on how life should be lived, Abraham said that true success lies in becoming unforgettable to others. He noted that Kambilikandamthile Kalbaranikal is, at its core, a book of gratitude. Readers who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, he added, do not approach the book as nostalgia or cliché, but instead respond by saying, “This is our book.” He observed that genuine writing transcends language and structure, emerging naturally without rigid frameworks.

“I cannot compose hymns to poverty and hunger, because they are cruel. I do not wish to cry over my life in an orphanage. The trauma of carrying human waste in a wicker basket is still vivid in my memory. I did not write this book to settle scores with anyone. Autobiographies driven by grudges only create a toxic relationship between the reader and the book,” Abraham said.

Writer Anju Sajith described the book as a powerful example of how a writer can document rural life with sensitivity and depth. She said the mother portrayed in the book stands out as one of the most compelling feminist figures in Malayalam literature published after 2000. Through the narrative, she noted, readers encounter a mother who instills confidence in her children, making the book essential reading for anyone seeking to understand how to document one’s own life with honesty.
