AI is a Present Reality; Human Skills Will Define the Future: Marcel Bandur

Kochi: Artificial intelligence is no longer a concept of the future but a reality already shaping education, careers and everyday life, said education specialist Marcel Bandur at the Summit of Future hosted by Jain University, Kochi.

Delivering a session titled “Education in the AI Era,” Bandur said the real challenge before society is not whether AI will change jobs and learning, but how humans must adapt in a world where machines increasingly perform tasks once done by people. He noted that the traditional model of “learn once, work forever” is no longer relevant and stressed the importance of continuous learning, adaptability and reskilling.

Bandur pointed out that while AI can process information and mimic language, it cannot replace uniquely human qualities such as emotional intelligence, empathy, ethical judgment and cultural understanding. These capabilities, he said, will be crucial in future workplaces and should be treated as core professional skills rather than optional soft skills.

Criticising rote learning and exam-focused education, Bandur warned that over-reliance on AI could create an illusion of learning, where students score higher but think less. He called for a shift in education systems towards critical thinking and ethical leadership.

He proposed the development of three key literacies; AI literacy, learning literacy and human literacy; to prepare students for the AI era, concluding that human value in the age of AI lies in wisdom, responsibility and deeper understanding rather than the mere production of information.
