Kochi: Cybersecurity expert Dr. Shravani Shahapure emphasized the need to understand the potential risks of a technology while it is being developed and to devise defensive measures accordingly. She was speaking during a panel discussion on the topic ‘Future Proof Defense’ at the Summit of the Future being held at Jain University, Kochi.
The summit discussed the revolutionary possibilities and the inherent threats of the emerging technology, Quantum Computing. Dr. Dhinakaran Vinayagamurthy, IBM Qiskit Manager, and Zakhil Suresh, a Cryptocurrency Asset Manager, also participated in the discussion.
Responding to a question from moderator Zakhil Suresh on whether Quantum Computing, which possesses far superior processing power than standard computers, would become a threat to cryptocurrency, Dr. Shravani Shahapure said: “Quantum Computing technology is currently in its evolutionary stage and is presently available only through cloud services. Once Quantum Computing becomes widely available in the market, it could adversely affect the digital sector.”
“This technology, currently in its development phase, will create massive changes in the future. There is a possibility that Quantum Computing could be detrimental to the existing digital ecosystem. If that happens, we must be technologically prepared to defend against it,” said Dr. Dinakaran Vinayagamurthy.
“When a technology is developed, its downsides must be understood, and preventive measures must be formulated. Even the digital signatures and biometric data currently in use could be misused with the help of Quantum Computing. We need to foresee this,” Dr. Shravani Shahapure added.
