Kochi: Polar scientist Dr. Thamban Meloth offered a glimpse into the rigours of Arctic and Antarctic research, alongside sharp insights on ocean research during the session ‘Frozen Frontiers: How India is Shaping Polar Science and Strategy’ at Jain University’s Summit of Future.

Apart from professional experiences Thampan Meloth’s take on India’s interest toward the polar region is purely related to science and exploration rather than gaining control over the region. India in future could be the Global South Leader in Ocean and Polar research and also have a big advantage in geopolitics. He responded to the question on India in another decade as they are planning on completing projects like Samudhrayan and the next decade promises vast opportunities, opening new opportunities to the aspiring explorers.

From helming the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Meloth shared his journey from a boy in Kasaragod to polar scientist inspiring the summit audience. “I never dreamed of science, but the ocean always felt inspiring,” he recalled. Upon joining CUSAT  passion led him to oceanography.

Kerala, he noted, serves as a live test bed for climate change impacts mirroring polar shifts in its coasts and monsoons underscoring the local stakes in global ice melt.

For aspiring researchers, Meloth emerged as a humble guide. “Antarctic dreams demand more than science: engineers, logisticians and diverse support teams conquer the ice together urging collaboration over solo genius,” he advised. The session provided foresights and reminding attendees that India’s polar push isn’t just about frozen frontiers it’s about securing tomorrow’s seas.
